How to Stop Meta AI from Using Your Instagram Photos (2026 Guide)

This one is of scary and honestly most people do not even know it is happening.

Meta just launched an AI image tool called Muse Image. In short if your Instagram account is public other people can now use your photos your face, your posts, your whole online presence to create AI images. All they have to do is tag your username while chatting with Meta AI.

Here is the part that really bothers me. You will not get a notification when this happens. Someone could be there right now creating AI pictures using your face and you would have no idea. Let me explain what is actually happening and importantly how you can turn it off.

What Exactly Is Happening

Metas AI model, Muse Image lets anyone type an @username into a prompt and pull that persons public photos into an AI generated image. Think custom invites, mockups, creative stuff. It sounds fun in theory except it is using your content without asking you

Now this is rolling out for US users through the Meta AI app, browser, WhatsApp and Instagram Stories. It has not fully hit India yet but going by how these rollouts work it is only a matter of time. So even if you are reading this from India it is worth sorting out your settings instead of later.

Why This Feels Wrong

Here is the thing that bugs a lot of creators. Meta made this an opt out feature, not opt in. That means by default your account is already included. You have to go dig through settings just to protect your face and content.

For creators going private is not really an option. Your whole reach, your growth, your clients, your business all of it depends on staying public. So Meta basically put creators in a spot where staying online means giving up control over how your content gets used.

You should not have to hunt for consent in a settings menu. It should just be the default.. Here we are.

How to Turn It Off

The news is it only takes a minute. Here is what to do:

  • First update your Instagram App
  • Open the Instagram app. Go to your profile.
  • Tap the three lines in the right corner.
  • Tap on Sharing and reuse.
  • Look for the option that says Allow people to use your content on Instagram and with AI features, on Meta.
  •  Turn off the toggle for Posts.
  • Turn off the toggle for Reels too.

That is it. Once both toggles are off people will not be able to use your posts or reels to generate AI content going forward. If you do not see this option yet in your settings do not panic. The feature is still rolling out in phases. Just save this post. Check back again in a few days.

Two Things You Should Know

Before you think you are fully covered keep these in mind.

First this setting blocks future AI generations. If someone already created an AI image using your content before you turned it off that image is not automatically deleted.

Second since the rollout is happening in stages some users are seeing this option already while others are not. If it is missing for you now it will likely show up soon.

Take two minutes go check your settings and turn those toggles off.. Honestly send this post to another creator friend of yours. Most people have no idea this setting even exists. That is exactly the problem.
